The success Tuan Lam has found in the poker world is a million miles away from what he experienced as a child. Born in Vietnam during the nation’s worse military conflict, Tuan managed to survive the horror of the war and left his homeland as soon as he was old enough to earn a living. He ended up in Canada, a place that’s now become his permanent home. With his original goal being to find enough work to start sending money back home, Tuan moved from job to job, desperate to find a steady income that would provide for his family.
Tuan eventually found himself working in a casino as a dealer, a job he enjoyed. Part of his role involved making up the numbers at tables that weren’t full, a job that meant he not only had to actually play poker, but make it believable too. Tuan decided he should buy a book to research the game and before long, he began to get good. Very good in fact. He’s been playing successfully as a pro ever since, earning a number of small but regular cashes in casinos across North America.
Despite being primarily a cash game specialist, Tuan travelled to Las Vegas in 2007 to play in the World Series Main Event. Twelve days and 6,358 players later, he sat down to take his seat at the final table, guaranteed to take home at least $500,000. He decided to bide his time, playing a solid but tight game while everyone else began to get knocked out. He eventually finished in 2nd place and took away an astonishing $4,840,981, making for a genuine tale of rags to riches.
Considering his background, it’s little surprise that Tuan spends most of his free time with his family. He has also used his winnings to help the people of his native Vietnam and travels back on a frequent basis.
Tuan’s story is one that perfectly sums up how poker gives anyone the chance to make millions of dollars. He is a member of Team PokerStars Pro and plays online with the screen name ‘TuanLam’.
